Aug 22-27: 30th Annual YMCA Book Fair at the Kennedy Center at
6050 Wells Road, near Meramec Bottom Road & I-55. Donations are being
accepted until July 31st at participating YMCA locations. Proceeds benefit the

Aug 23-24: International Institute Festival of
Nations.
Each summer the Festival of Nations features an exceptional array of ethnic
heritages through authentic food, dance, music, crafts, sports and more in
Tower Grove Park (So. Grand & Arsenal). Admission is FREE. Fun for all
ages! The Children’s Area features
ethnic storytelling, mask-making and other hands-on activities. Don’t miss St.
Louis’ leading multicultural celebration and be sure to visit the DSCC booth.

with taking pictures of gardens (July 1, 2, 3), judge the gardens and assist in
presenting the Garden Awards at the General Meeting on Monday, August 4, 2008

2) Dutchtown South Community
Corporation (DSCC) will have a table promoting DSCC and the Dutchtown, Gravois
Parks, Marine Villa and Mount Pleasant Neighborhoods at at the Festival of Nations in
late August and the Hispanic Festival in early September. There will be at least 2 individuals scheduled per
shift with morning, afternoon or evening shifts available. Please call Connie

1) NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT AWARDS - SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS! Each year DSCC gives out home improvement awards
in recognition of exceptional exterior home improvements that contribute to the
betterment of the neighborhood. Submit your nominations by September 15, 2008
to DSCC by phone (352-4865) or email (dscc@dutchtownsouth.org).
2) June 28: First Annual Blessing of
the Bikes & Dutchtown Bike Tour from 10 AM – 1 PM. Meet at St. Anthony’s
Church Parking Lot @ 10:15 AM to receive a blessing from Father Jim to keep
everyone safe on the bike paths in the coming year. Go to Urban Eats located at
3301 Meramec (at Virginia) to receive your free Bike Tour Map with Historic
Notes by NiNi Harris. First 50 people get free water and an Urban Eats Gift
Certificate. Not able to attend? Maps will be available throughout the year at
Urban Eats and Dutchtown South Community Corporation (4204 Virginia).
3) The Marquette & Cherokee
Pools opened June 9, 2008 and will remain open until August 17, 2008. For more

4) City of St. Louis
Recreation Division Summer Day Camps. Openings will be filled on a first-come,
first-serve basis after
June 9, 2008. You may apply in person at any of the Recreation Centers or call
289-5320 for more information. Summer Playground and Day Camp Times for Ages
4-6 is from 9:30 AM – 1 PM and for Ages 7-12 from 9:30 AM – 4 PM. A USDA
approved lunch will be provided FREE at all summer sites. All summer sessions
are FREE! Last Summer Session is July 21 – 25.
5) Project Safe Place: A
crisis prevention program for children and teens. When kids need help fast,
they can go to “Safe Place Sites,” local businesses or organizations that
display the yellow and black Safe Place sign. All employees of designated Safe
Place sites are trained to give the young person a quiet place to sit while
they call the Youth In Need 24-Hour Hotline. A Safe Place case worker will
immediately be sent to pick up the child, assess the situation, and offer
necessary assistance. For more information about Project Safe Place call Karen
at 636-946-5600 ext. 251. The 24-hour helpline is 636-946-3771. Youth In Need
located at 3001 Meramec (at Minnesota) is a designated “Safe Place” for youth.
6) REPORT NUISANCE BEHAVIORS!
Nuisance Behavior Includes: public drinking; loitering in front yards,
sidewalks or streets; using, distributing and/or selling illegal drugs;
prostitution; playing music or conversing loud enough that your neighbors can
hear you; overcrowding. Call the police Each And Every Time you observe a
nuisance behavior. 1) Dial 911 for an emergency or 231-1212 for a
non-emergency. 2) Say, “This is a Nuisance Property” and give the address of
the nuisance property. 3) Be prepared to give specifics about What, Who, When
and Where. 4) Tell your alderman and NSO so the property will be documented as
a nuisance. Don’t know who your alderman or NSO is? Call DSCC at
352-4865 we will find out for you.
7) Watch out for contracting scams!
Do your homework before hiring a contractor. DSCC has Contractor List with Tips

8) Trouble Paying or Behind
on Your Mortgage?
Call 1-888-995-HOPE! You’ll talk to an advisor from a HUD-approved agency.
There is no cost for these services, and the advisor can work with you to get
back on track and help you stay out of foreclosure. Being in foreclosure can be
overwhelming and stressful. Get help from a trustworthy and knowledgeable
resource. Help is available; don’t be afraid to reach out. Beware of scams –
don’t sign anything you don’t understand. Beware of “counseling” services that
charge any fee for help with mortgage troubles, as well as phone or mail offers
that seem too good to be true.
9) Worried about Car Theft?
JOIN THE CLUB! The club is a highly successful anti-theft device that has been
shown to deter car theft. Car clubs are available at DSCC for $11; please call
for availability

Stabilization Office located at City Hall, Room 418. For more information call

10) Free Credit Report - You
have the right to get a free copy of your report, once every 12 months, from
each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian
and TransUnion. For more information on obtaining your free credit report, call

11) Register to Vote! Voter
registration cards are available at the DSCC Office located at 4204 Virginia
(at Meramec). They are also available at the public library and the post
office. You can also request a registration form be mailed to you by calling
622-4336.
12) RideFinders, the St.
Louis regional rideshare program provides a free ridematching service to help
commuters carpool or vanpool to work. For more information call 1-800-847-7433

13) Greening St. Louis –
Operation Brightside. Is there an area in your neighborhood that really needs
to be cleaned up and beautiful? Consider a Neighbors Naturescaping, Growing St.
Louis or Community Connection greening project to improve the public area in
your neighborhood. Any neighborhood association, community group, block unit or
school in the City of St. Louis is eligible to apply. If you are interested in
